Middle School to Dental School™

Middle School to Dental School is an outreach program targeting middle school students developed to help inspire interest in careers across the dental profession. The goal of this early pathway to dentistry is to help support the oral health care infrastructure by encouraging youth to begin thinking about careers in dentistry and medicine as soon as 5th grade.

Middle School to Dental School

This mentoring initiative begins with a 20-to-30-minute power point presentation. The content contained in the delivery of this information includes a welcome and introduction from The Children’s Oral Health Institute and or the presenting organization. A brief history of dentistry is shared, for example knowledge that the first recorded dentist known as Hesy-Ra was from Ancient Egypt and the first dental school in the world is the University of Maryland College of Dentistry. Stories are told of trailblazers including Dr. Ida, Gray, Dr. Lucy Hobbs, Dr. G. V. Black, Dr. Robert T. Freeman, and other historical figures from our proud profession.

The program provides tangible resources to excite and connect middle school youth from grades 5 to 8 to oral health care. The students are thrilled when everyone receives a white doctor’s coats exclusively designed by The Children’s Oral Health Institute that reads on the back, “I can become a dentist,” and bares the Middle School to Dental School logo printed on the front right. Students receive a stethoscope, a mouse pad describing the anatomy of teeth and much compliments of our many generous sponsors.

Volunteers can earn continuing education credit hours while learning meaningful ways to encourage children and youth to consider career opportunities within the profession of dental medicine. Those who commit their time to this initiative may very well contribute to the expansion of dental professionals in communities where the need is greatest and for this we are grateful.
