Healthy Halloween PartyThe first Healthy Halloween Party was held in Baltimore in 1988, hosted by Dr. Winifred J. Booker and her dental practice staff. The initiative was introduced to Dr. Booker while she was a student at Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry. The local businesses are asked to help sponsor the party designed to keep children safe during Halloween and to educate them about proper dental hygiene and good dietary choices. The Children’s Oral Health Institute sponsored the first Healthy Halloween Party in 1996. Flyers are distributed throughout the community inviting hundreds of children and parents to the event. A fifty-cent coverage charge helps to defray the cost of renting the facility. The children are treated to fun, oral health videos, including The Haunted Mouth, It’s Dental Flossophy Charlie Brown and Tooth Brushing with Charlie Brown. Music, magic, games and dancing are all part of the entertainment. For the grand finale’ the trick-or-treaters are given a metallic Halloween bag and then lined up to walk from table to table to claim their delicious fruit treats and invaluable oral, health treasures. The visible at night metallic bags, are filled at each station with apples, bananas, oranges, pears, cheese & crackers, sunflower seeds, raisins, and more. The dressed to scare, guest receive a dental health coloring book & non-toxic crayons. The bag is topped off with the most important gifts of all prior to leaving. A toothbrush toothpaste and dental floss are intentionally saved for least. |
